RANDANG
The delicious of rendang is inseparable from the journey of how the origin of rendang was discovered by the Minangkabau people.
However, it is not known when exactly it was invented, due to the lack of written evidence. Therefore, researchers have summarized the origin of rendang.
HISTORY 1
14th Century
Rendang is associated with a modified form of Indian curry. In the 14th century, Indian traders arrived on the west coast of Sumatra.
It is believed that many Indian traders lived in the Minang region during that century. Hence, spices were introduced to the local people.
HISTORY 2
16th Century
Rendang is thought to have emerged in the 16th century, linked to the custom of migrating (merantau).
In that century, Minangkabau people sailed to Malacca by ship, so rendang became a provision. This is because rendang is more durable than other dishes.
HISTORY 3
Kingdom of Pagaruyung
It is possible that rendang dates back to the pagaruyung kingdom. During the time of king Adityawarman (1347M - 1375M). Also, the meat used is from buffalo.
HISTORY 4
Colonel Stuers (1827)
In 1827 Colonel Stuers wrote about food and literature. Implicit in his notes, he often mentions blackened and charred foods. This writing points to Rendang.
According to a researcher, this is one of the preservation methods commonly practiced by the Minang people.
